EdTerm Framework
The Learning Identity System is EdTerm's framework for tracking how individuals adapt, decide, grow, and build identity through real-world experience over time — not just what they know at a fixed point in time.
Pre-Product · Seeking Pilot Partners & Academic CollaboratorsWhat It Is
The current education system measures what a person knows at a fixed point in time. It does not measure who they are becoming. A grade captures a moment. A test score captures recall under pressure. A transcript captures completion. None of these capture the qualities that actually predict success in work and life.
The Learning Identity System changes that. By combining experiential learning, mentorship, reflection, and behavioral pattern analysis, it creates a dynamic, living record of a learner's growth — tracking adaptive capacity, decision-making patterns, curiosity, resilience, and values development across years, not semesters.
Employers consistently report that academic credentials are weak predictors of job performance. What they actually need to know — how someone thinks under pressure, how they adapt when plans fail, how they collaborate — is invisible in a traditional transcript. The Learning Identity System closes that gap.
Why It Matters
Traditional systems were built to sort people efficiently, not to understand them deeply. The Learning Identity System measures what actually matters for a person's long-term growth and capability.
| What Traditional Systems Measure | What the Learning Identity System Measures |
|---|---|
| GPA | Adaptive capacity and growth trajectory |
| Test scores | Problem-solving patterns and decision-making style |
| Courses completed | Experiential learning and real-world capability |
| Attendance | Curiosity, self-direction, and intrinsic motivation |
| Academic rank | Resilience, collaboration style, and values development |
The Framework
01
A dynamic living document that captures who the learner is becoming across multiple dimensions — updated continuously over years, not at semester intervals.
02
Records learning that happens outside a classroom — internships, community projects, personal challenges, creative work, travel, and entrepreneurship. Most of this currently disappears from any educational record.
03
An AI layer that identifies patterns the learner themselves may not consciously recognize — not surveillance, but interpretation. Inputs for mentors and for the learner's own self-awareness.
04
The system only functions with humans in the loop. The mentor relationship is not a feature of the system — it is the heart of it. Technology makes that relationship more informed, not replaced.
05
Owned by the learner and portable across institutions, employers, and life stages. A Learning Identity that disappears at graduation is not a Learning Identity — it is just a different kind of transcript.
Who It Is For
Institutions looking to move beyond grades and transcripts to capture a richer, more honest picture of student development and real-world capability.
Organizations that need to understand how someone actually thinks, adapts, and collaborates — not just what degrees they hold or credentials they've accumulated.
Scholars working in developmental psychology, education, AI ethics, or alternative credentialing with interest in the theoretical foundations of this work.
Individuals whose most significant learning has happened outside formal systems — and who currently have no way to surface that growth or capability in any recognized form.
We Are Pre-Product
EdTerm is in active research and development. We are seeking pilot institutions, academic collaborators, and aligned organizations who want to be part of defining what learning measurement should look like — before the mainstream catches up.
